There were 2,200 Leeds fans in the crowd of 9,005. Peter Reid critisized the squad for lacking drive as they slumped to their first defeat of the pre-season. He was pleased with the debut performances of Jody Morris and Zoumana Camera and the effort of Alan Smith, but the supporters found little to encourage them. Burnley twice took the lead in the first half, with Richard Chaplow scoring after Leeds lost possession in midfield, but Mark Viduka equalized, after fifteen minutes and then after Ian Moore had headed the home side's second after good work from Robbie Blake, Alan Smith, after thirty-four minutes, equalized once more for Leeds. Gareth Taylor missed an open goal and then Glen Little fired over the top to squander chances for the home side. There was a twenty-man brawl just before the interval, but surprisingly no cards were issued. James Milner came on for Mark Viduka and Rodrigo replaced Jason Wilcox, at the start of the second half, but Burnley took the lead after David Batty had conceded a penalty, for a foul on Robbie Blake. There were three more changes in the sixty-second minute as Matthew Kilgallon replaced Zoumana Camera in defence, and Nick Barmby replaced Gary Kelly and Stephen McPhail replaced David Batty in midfield. Michael Duberry conceded a penalty for handling the ball for Burnley to extend their lead and Simon Johnson replaced Alan Smith with five minutes left. The Burnley substitutes, Dean West, Alan Moore, Tony Grant and Matthew O'Neil were all used. The Referee was Tony Leake.
